*City holds bin sale to promote backyard composting*

Starting your own backyard compost can be made easier thanks to the
City’s Environmental Services Department compost bin sale program. The
one-day sale will be held, rain or shine, on* Saturday, August 25* from
8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the following locations:

o *Wal-Mart Supercenter Parking Lot at 8030 Bandera Road*
o *Wal-Mart Supercenter Parking Lot at 16503 Nacogdoches Road*
o *Wal-Mart Supercenter Parking Lot at 3302 S.E. Military Drive*

Through this program, individuals can purchase an Earth Machine™ home
composting device for only $20 plus tax (while supplies last); the bin
retails for $80. Payment is accepted in the form of cash or check. In
addition to the sale, residents will be provided with information on
composting and recycling. This event is an initiative the City is making
to promote home composting that helps residents care for the earth in
their own backyards while reducing the amount of waste going to the
landfills.

The Earth Machine™ can be used to compost fruit and vegetable scraps,
crushed eggshells, tea bags, coffee grounds and filters in to soil humus
for your lawn and garden. Composting at home can reduce household
garbage by up to 30%. Compost creates a rich, all natural soil nutrient
for landscapes, gardens, and houseplants. Compost also enhances soil’s
ability to retain moisture and can reduce reliance on chemical
fertilizers as well as suppresses plant diseases and pests.

The Earth Machine™ sale is financed with funds from the Texas Commission
on Environmental Quality through the Alamo Area Council of Governments.
